As many of you know, writing the Knicks Film School newsletter is not my full time job.
For the last nine years (as of today!), I have also been a proud educator working for the New York City Department of Education.
Over that time, in many of the classes I’ve taught, I’ve run into the same conundrum as thousands of teachers across the country:
To teach to the test, or not teach to the test?
Standardized testing has become a fixture in eduction for some time now. Ever since it has, everyone who has stood in front of a classroom has had to ask themselves a very simple question: do we focus our energy on preparing students for that inevitable exam, or do we simply teach what we feel is in the best interest of the kids, test scores be damned?
As best as I can tell, no one has come up with a singular correct answer. It is left up to each individual pedagogue as to how they feel is the best method to prepare their classroom for long term success. At the end of the day, you make your path, and live with the results.
Well late last night, the Knicks made their choice.
