Good morning. You know the drill. No halftime zoom tonight, but I’ll be back on Sunday.

Moving On

I know what the assignment is today.

Today is the day we pick ourselves (myself) up, dust ourselves (myself) off, and rah rah, sis boom bah our way into some positivity for tonight.

The Knicks are in the Eastern Conference Finals. We spent days justifying our collective jubilation over this accomplishment precisely because they haven’t had this opportunity in a quarter century. To slink off with our tails between our legs because of one loss in a seven-game series would not only be shortsighted, but if I were a fan of some other team, I’d call it grounds for having to wait another 25 years before we get another shot.

I get it. And I’ll get through it. I’ve faked my way through worse.

But my heart isn’t in it. Not close, really. It’s still Thursday morning as I’m writing this (8:55 am, to be exact), so maybe I’ll feel differently as the day goes on, but right now, I feel done. Right now I just want the season to end. I want to spend the next five months hanging out with my daughters, preferably outside, in a park or a playground or anywhere I can pretend that the rest of the world doesn’t exist. I want to engage with the things in my life that don’t cause the worst sort of pain - pain that isn’t just severe, but pain that makes you feel like an absolute moron for allowing its very presence in your life.

This is, as the kids say, loser behavior, but I’m too old and give too few shits to hide it. If I was paying hard-earned dollars every month to read a Knicks newsletter that is supposed to add value to my fandom, is this the sort of thing I’d want to read?

Probably not.

So lets agree that figuring out how I can better sustain the task of objectively covering something that is so intertwined with my daily happiness quotient will be my personal offseason project.

For now, there’s still basketball left to play.

On that front, I’ll start by echoing Benjy’s sentiments from the postgame show. If ever there was a group of players who can put this level of devastation behind them, it is this one.
