My wife said something last night that made me pause, “ I thought that these games would be more fun to watch, more enjoyable. However, each new game seems to bring more anxiety. I’m getting more and more nervous as they advance.” She just told this to a guy who paced through last nights game until the the final 1:48 mark of the fourth when I briefly sat down until the Hart “ flagrant “ got me pacing again till there was 30 seconds left. There’s no question I’m absurdly euphoric now. There’s no question I too am a jangled ball of nerves watching these games. One more, than the finals. I guess the nerves are just the cost of doing business to us fans.

OMG Martin, when he fouled Strus on the 3 and they called it a flagrant, my stomach turned upside down.

Ganesh Kumar's avatar

It was definitely not a flagrant

JG's avatar

It’s so true. Obviously, I love the results but as each game time approaches, I find myself almost dreading it because I know I’ll be stressed for the next 2-3 hours.

I hear you, Martin. During the comeback and overtime in game one I could smell my own sweat as the toxins were coming out of my body.😀

Related to Leo Melamed? If so, I met him once — inspirational and beloved

Melamed as in teacher/ scholar ( I’m neither). However, there was one in every shtetl in Europe. My family is particularly small, but there are loads of Melamed’s. No relation to a Leo, and sadly no relation to Lou Melamed a producer of Car 54 Where Are You. A classic tv comedy of a few years back. Thank you for the interest.

I had to turn to a song from 1973 to describe my current feelings. Was Paul Simon writing about the Knicks championship team of 1973?

“When something goes right, it’s apt to confuse me, it’s likely to lose me cause it’s such an unusual sight. I can’t get used to something so right. Something so right.”

Mikep@mepressman.com's avatar

At least it wasn't its against the law.

Ken's avatar

(: very true. Also, in 1973 we were accustomed to something so right. The PTSD took years to set in.

This doesn’t feel like real life at all. “Absurd” is a very appropriate way to describe it. Shout out to Jon and Andrew for the watch alongs. I watch every game with my 13 year old son and we keep the watch along on the iPad and sync it so that the watch along is 5 seconds behind the action. My son loves to look at Jon and Andrew’s reaction to every positive Knicks play. My son was in stitches listening to Jon call out the Cavs fans for walking out with over 2 min left. Thank you guys for creating this community!

Jonathan Macri's avatar

That means so much that you share the watchalongs with your son Vince. These have been such a pleasure for us. And sorry about the foul language!

Vince N's avatar

Ha - no worries about the language — nothing he hasn’t heard before. I needed to be bleeped out when Hart committed that foul on the 3 pointer!

you and me both

This was the agita game. The game where you kept watching and waiting for something bad to happen and it never did. Every time there was a glimmer from Cleveland the Knicks snuffed it out. The funny thing is JON I don't feel they hit their potential ofplaying their best and the upside of the type of games we saw in Philly and Atlanta can bring us to the other side when they do all play at their best. Brunson shots were not dropping the way they were even though the point total was fine. Kat wasn't at his best but was more than good enough. To be offended by OG not making the first team we all should be offended that it was ridiculous. Let's bring out the broom and finish this job and go on for the golden chalice. Love this team.

Jonathan Macri's avatar

In fairness, better competition (which Cleveland is) makes you look worse ("worse" being a relative term of course)

Mikep@mepressman.com's avatar

Fair comment Jon. As my golf coach says, "you can do better." to see Brunson throwing that many points on a bad night; to see Kat working his ass off; to see Shamet throwing in threes in the fourth quarter; see Alvarado not finding the basket and Deuce not producing like can; i'm still in awe.We can do better and will. I was giddy by the end of the night.

JG's avatar

I agree that as good as we’ve played against Cleveland, we can actually be better. Brunson has been rough from three. Mitch has been off. Last night, I thought our own careless turnovers kept it closer than it should have been. First-world basketball problems. Never thought I’d see that as a Knicks fan.

Mikep@mepressman.com's avatar

Totally agree. Plus the fact that deuce and Alvarado really haven't done much at all. At a point I even thought Hokporti might come in to stop the hack a Mitch. No matter who we face in the west we will need to bring our A game. The objective probably came from too much sloppy.

Been watching Knick games since the magical season of 1970. And over the past 56 years, there have been a small handful of great Knick teams. Of course, probably the best team over the past 56 years was the title winning team of 1973.

Next best was the 1994 near-title winning team. Then the team that got its sh@t together in playoff season of 1999 was the fourth best team. They were the eighth seed that year so they definitely were not in the class of the two title teams or 57-win team in 93-94.

I believe this season’s team (assuming the Knicks beat Cleveland, knock wood, take nothing for granted) is the third best Knicks team of all time, behind the two title winning teams. Of course this season’s team’s conclusion is not yet written. Maybe, just maybe we are watching a team as good as the two title-winning teams. 🤞🙏🏻

Jonathan Macri's avatar

fingers crossed

Martin Melamed's avatar

It’s almost too good to be real. I do wish they put a clock limit that KAT can play Statute of Liberty with the bball

Lee's avatar

I just cannot get over what I’m watching. This is EXACTLY what Mikal Bridges was supposed to be. Same for OG, same for Hart, same for KAT (and more). I don’t need Leon Rose to address the media, but I am curious to hear him talk about basketball. His vision for this roster should be studied.

John Taylor's avatar

The reason they are on a streak? I’m travelling in Scotland and unable to watch any of the games. You’re welcome. (Following on the watchalong is a hoot, though!)

Stay there.

glad you're enjoying!

Yup. There I am at 3 am local time, getting my Knicks fix

Just six short weeks ago we were all furious at the Orlando Magic for the no-show in Boston that led to a 1st round matchup against the Atlanta Hawks. Instead of the much preferred Toronto matchup, we got a perceived tougher defensive opponent. We were grateful to be in the 2/3 bracket so we could avoid the Pistons until the ECF. The Celtics were lurking in Round 2, rejuvenated by the late-season return of Jason Tatum. Who could have ever seen this coming? The Knicks have gone through the #6 and #7 seeds to advance to the ECF and are thisclose to a sweep of the #4 seed. It feels silly now to doubt the process. Mike Brown and Leon Rose were right to sacrifice regular season wins for playoff success. As Knick fans, we had so many years of losing that we could not grasp the thought of not trying to win every regular season game, which is why we all loved Thibs. But it's obvious now that going all out in the regular season and being the spent team in the playoffs is not a formula for success. Knicks have been the rested team in Rounds 2 and 3 and have steamrolled their opponents, instead of being the worn out team that limped to the finish against the Pacers the last 2 years. I look at that Cavs team and think "that was us", exhausted from going all out in Rounds 1 & 2 only to have nothing left in the tank to advance.

The next round will be a tough task no matter who they play. But as the regular season ended we were not even sure we would get out of the first round. What a ride! LFGK!

Fell asleep at 3:30 and up at 7:30. Couldn’t be in a better mood. We are just so locked in man. It’s a joy to watch them every other night. And this team is going to hopefully gift all us husbands / parents with another week off for family time. Just crazy !!

Can’t say enough about the starters. Second straight great game together. We are just so locked in right now. Was nice to see Mitch come alive a bit last night. Those of us who watched the reg season have seen Shamet do this before, but for the best vet minimum contract in the league, on this stage truly encapsulates what this team is about.

It is my custom to send some superchat love after each series win and I look forward to doing it again Monday. Not even sure how I can relax before the game. I am still freaking out now. Like can’t think about anything else. Do we buy champagne to put on ice for Monday? Haven’t been in this situation as an of age adult before 😂 and watched them clinch in 99 from the garden. All tips encouraged !!

P.S. I promise you that we hear the media talking about the thunder and spurs series is the real finals. I promise we don’t give a flying **ck. First it was Atlanta being a frisky good matchup then the Sixers and then the Cavs. Please stay doubting us

Jonathan Macri's avatar

I loved this entire comment (because I too was up at 7:30) but I especially loved the postscript.

Jon Heller's avatar

Hard to even get mad at any anti-Knicks propaganda we hear anymore. Just love proving everyone wrong time and again. Take care of business on Monday !!

Martin hit the nail on the head. These games live are anything but enjoyable, as my stress levels go through the roof! And yes, as I was screaming at the TV, "No stupid fucking fouls Josh" & as Breen was already ceding the game to the Knicks, Visions of Reggie Miller were floating in the back of my head! And even when I watch the replays, I need to tell myself "Calm down stupid", they won!

What can you say that hasn't been said 9 times already? So far, this has been everything every Knicks fan has dreamed about, but never truly believed could come to fruition. Why did the 1969-70 & 1972-73 Knicks win championships? Team work! Self sacrificing for the greater good. If you told me earlier in the year that this team would mirror those teams, I would have sarcastically laughed & told you to talk to your therapist! lol I have an appointment this week with my therapist & he'll probably ask me how I'm feeling about my Knicks!

Now as a very long time Yankee fan who still breaks out in a cold sweat every time someone mentions the 2004 Boston Red Sox (Yankees led 3-0 in the AL Championship Series, only to lose the next 4), I always quote the great philosopher Yogi Berra who said, "It ain't over 'til it's over!" (Yes, I know Churchill said a version earlier), so until we win the fourth game needed to go to to The NBA Finals, excuse me if I still stay somewhat stressed out until it's done! #AlwaysKnicks/ForeverNewYork

Nah, more like self preservation. All fans go through more disappointment than elation, so it's easier to put in emotional safeguards prior to the series/games you watch. Martin described it very well in his post this morning!

AHT's avatar

It’s been absurd to watch how much this team seems to enjoy playing the game. It’s been absurd to watch them embrace the next man up mentality, and make contributions on both ends of the court without trying to force anything. Collectively it’s absurd that they haven’t played their best basketball yet. It’s also ridiculously absurd that they keep finding new ways to win even when it seems improbable.

Jonathan Macri's avatar

Love these additions AHT!

Been up since 430am too wired I feel you JM.

Jtictac's avatar

It wasn’t a dream?!?!

Chris A's avatar

I keep waiting to wake up from the dream, but this is all actually happening, isn’t it?

Last time I had this feeling was the 2007 Giants run. Let’s hope this ends the same way that did.

I’m never going to get my head around the point differential. We’re not just winning these games. We’re crushing playoff competition night in and night out.

Irwin Glenn's avatar

Nice write up.

Let's run through this tape all the way to the parade.

Just grateful.

Let's win Monday, hope the other series goes 7 and keep fingers crossed we can continue this magical ride.
