I might put the Pacers above the Hawks - I agree Pacers are potentially scary.
Knicks defensive issues really worry me. I worry regression could happen this year. Feels like it could be a weird year for the Knicks, waiting for the other shoe to drop on a trade. And the uncertainty of IQ (unless he extends in the next nine hours).
I know it is taboo to give the Nets any love, but Claxton is my dark horse favorite for Defensive Player of the year. They figure to have a fabulous defense if Simmons continues to trend up and with Bridges already there, along with a bunch of talented wing defenders. And so Claxton is going to be anchoring what I expect will be one of the leagues best defenses.
I can see that Jonathan. However, if one of the teams you mentioned (terrible teams, tons of cap space) come for Quick, they are coming with a contract that if not max, will be damn close plus with poison pill clauses that will be a ticking time bomb for the team that matches. The Knicks in this case.
I think if we wake up tomorrow to a newsletter from Jonathan debating the merits of not extending Quick, the Knicks are in trouble. He is arguably their best to third best all-around player; generally shows up for every game; is a team player, first/last/and in between; and still with more upside than downside.
Would you pay $25m per year for such a player. I would.
If they don’t sign him because they are still chasing their unicorn, I dare say, this Knicks team has peaked.
Here's the only pushback: because he's restricted, them not extending him doesn't mean he's going anywhere. If anything, I'd argue NOT extending him now makes it MORE likely he stays here past next summer. If they ink him to a reasonable number - around 22 or 23 a year - I think he's as good as gone next July.
Sorry to jump on someone else's reply - but I fully agree that IQ NOT extending now makes it more likely he's a Knick long-term. And I have to wonder if that's part of IQ's calculus now. Essentially, I've been worried for a while now that IQ and his agent's stance will be: "Are you extending me at a reasonable number to be smart about the cap, or you extending me at a reasonable number to make me easier to trade?" The more I think about it, I think it'd be extremely easy for IQ to talk himself into betting on himself in this scenario. It also gives him more control over his eventual destination. He extends now, he might find himself in Cleveland next summer. I have to think that's part of his calculation.

Keep hope alive! 9 hours is a long time. Pacers above the hawks isn't nuts.
If Q wasn't already on the Knicks we would be coveting him...why r they playing this game and why is he in discussions to be traded?
And, to be clear, I’ve figured we would sign Quick at 4y/96M for the past 6 months. So both my insights and feelings are probably a bit suspect...
It’s weird to me that it looks like neither Quick nor Maxey will get an extension. I have no insights... just an odd feeling

I don’t understand why the 76ers and Cavs are a tier ahead of the Knicks.
Fair. I just think they have a higher floor because of their top end talent.
