I never considered Patrick Ewing imperfect. However, I have considered the front offices during his term to be imperfect because they could never put a real star next to him. (Caveat: I loved the 90’s teams and I loved #33. The phrase, “leave it all on the floor,” was invented for Pat.
Building off of the previous comment, I also think the extra time and opportunities that our young role players will get in Randle’s absence could be invaluable come playoff time.
Looking for silver linings, if he only misses the 9 games leading up to All-Star break (or even some more after), guys like Grimes, McBride, Hart (who’s been begging for more touches), and Achiuwa have a real chance to step up in games that will be quite important for seeding in a cramped East.
I’m also hoping coaches select him despite the injury (since he can then be replaced) because I think he earned it.
One silver lining to the injury might be that, if the Knicks were looking to bring in a creator/facilitator that is more than a bench piece, this would give him time to get significant run with the rest of the team and get comfortable before Jules returns.
Very relieved. I have been stressing over the MRI results like Julius is a family member lol.
It sucks he'll be out for a few weeks, but if this was gonna happen, better before the deadline than after. Wouldn't be surprised if the Bruce Brown rumors pick up again. Julius is 1 of 1, but if we need to bring in some outside help to tread water, you could do worse than Brown -- Thibs guy with championship experience. You don't have to worry about him not fitting in and he'll still have a rotation spot once big fella is back (sorry, Deuce)
Been hard to not drink the Kool-Aid this month the way the team's been rolling. We need Julius if we're gonna make a deep run. Hope he heals quickly and tonight, let's get win #30 for #30!
I agree Chris, Bruce Brown would be perfect for this team. He is in the mold of Hart, OG, Deuce, Randle, Jalen, Donte, iHart, Mitch-- guys who would go through a brick wall for a loose ball.
HUGE sigh of relief. Though as Ian cautions - not out of the woods yet. There's a chance he opts to try to go the rest and rehab route and tries playing with the shoulder again only to determine it's not going to work and they need surgery. There's a chance it gets reaggravated - who wants to take bets on Bam Adebayo "inadvertently" karate-chopping and yanking on Randle's right shoulder multiple times the next time they play?
I have a feeling the Knicks may be spurred to ante up and offer a little more on Bojan and/or Bruce Brown. The presence and play of OG makes me consider Bojan in a way I hadn't before. I think he'd capably replace Randle's offense in the starting lineup (or at least 70-80% of it), if not fully replace his gravity in the middle of the floor. And I think Bojan would also be an excellent offensive focal point off the bench if Randle is able to return - which would allow us to keep Deuce in the rotation. Bonus points - Bojan is continuous soup for next season.
Anyway, it'll be an interesting 10 or 11 days leading up to the trade deadline. But definitely feel a huge sigh of relief on Randle. Hopefully it continues to be good news and he's back on the court by March.
Jon is right to suggest that Bruce Brown looks more attractive than before. If OG starts in Randle's position and Hart is the starting 3, Brown can provide something like Hart's lift off the bench while also providing some creation and scoring. His Swiss-Army-Knife versatility provides security for other injuries we might face.
Sean's suggestion of Bojan is worth exploring further. He could actually start next to OG, make up for some of Randle's absent scoring, and be staggered with Hart in the second unit. I haven't gotten to "On the Shoulder of a Giant" yet, to hear Jeremy's take. And I'll also want to hear from our talent and fit evaluators. I don't know enough about Bojan to judge how much he'd help us. His rebounding and assist stats aren't promising.
As I said the other day, if Brunson and Anunoby are as good as they seem, the window we were waiting for is already open, at least a bit. No year with an open window should be wasted. If Randle comes back soon and his play is at Saturday's level, this is such a year.
Jon - don’t you think this increases the urgency to move Fournier and get in someone productive? We’re going to have other guys banged up and we’re incredibly thin as is. I know we want someone in his contract slot as “continuous soup”, but maybe we should be a little less choosy, and soon. If a star trade comes along and we need to trade Josh Hart or Donte this summer, then that’s the risk we may have to run.
It is totally unfair to Fournier to put him on ice for a third consecutive season (2024-25). Agents and other players take note. Thus I agree Jon, ,I would be shocked if he is still on the team February 10th.
He's "Our Ewing". Our imperfect Superstar. The Rock of our team.
Wishing him a speedy recovery. Love to the Randles.

Patrick never had a complimentary player beside him.
Nope. let alone a guy like Brunson
Love the comp.

I like this idea.

Brown would instantly become this team's secondary ballhandler with Ju out

I think the Knicks value Brown's winning an NBA title last year quite a bit.
I'd happily take either Bogey or Brown. Would be helpful in different ways.
I have that same feeling. Happy but also still scared.

Yea...but like...now lol. Not in 10 days.
I gotcha. Um....IDK that they'll pay over market, and it feels like they'd be doing that to make a deal this far out. I could be wrong
The Knick Offense needs a primary scorer (especially w RJ and IQ gone)as insurance and support Brunson and Randle for a deep playoff run.
It’s time to use Fournier expiring, our draft picks, Grimes, whatever it takes to bring in a proven scorer like DeMar DeRozan.
“To properly do that though, we have to backtrack a bit.”
*proceeds to backtrack to before the season started*
What’s more than “a bit”? Would we backtrack to when Randle was born?
Bill Simmons casually dropped “out for 3 weeks” on this morning’s pod, and he’s obviously very well connected.
