The thought of Thibs’ Tinder profile got a legit laugh out of me.

“The relationship tells you what to do. You either get married or you learn. Me? I’ve been learning a lot. I’ve learned most women want to do more than just watch basketball all day. Hopefully you’re different.”

Question is whether his favorite song is “Work” by Iggy Azalea or “you learn” by Alannis Morrisette…

I'm partial to Drake & Rihanna's "Work" myself. Thus, Thibs must also be partial to that one.

Listen I don't have time for games unless it's basketball and that's how it is.

This is too good.

Let’s face it, and I don’t say this to overreact to last night, but there’s a large enough sample size to see that this current roster is mediocre, and would be hard-pressed to be a play-in team over a full season. The effort is there but the offensive talent is not. Brunson is constantly being trapped and defended by big wings and there’s not enough out there to take any pressure off. OG will help but I hope everyone realizes how valuable Julius is and that this team won’t approach its ceiling without him playing at a high level. They greatly miss his offensive gravity.

Brunson and DDV look worn out. Shooters have to have their leg drive. Playing unsustainable minutes is going to have an impact. Wondering whether we have reached that point.

Expand full comment

It may be partly the minutes but more a product of being asked to do too much during those minutes. Donte’s shot volume has been outrageous, if necessary. And Brunson has to initiate everything whenever he’s on the floor. Julius helped lighten that load. And the team currently has no reliable front court scorer, unless you count Bogey who has been underwhelming. Tough to win that way.

The most disturbing thing about the game was how we were bullied. Sixers grabbed, pushed and hacked, and we didn’t overcome it. Grateful to DDV for finally pushing back

I’m putting it down to the negative effects of Daylight Savings Time. It just messes everybody up!

Weird night in the NBA. Heat losing at home to the Wizards. Cavs losing at home to the Nets. You thought the Knicks result was maddening until you saw the results of those other games. Knicks just couldn't shoot last night-Sixers weren't much better. Awful basketball.

Heaven forbid Anunoby plays tomorrow. It's only been since January since he went out with what was supposed to be a "day to day" injury. Why rush back? Never mind that other guys like Hart, Devo, Achiuwa, not to mention Brunson, are busting their butts playing 40 plus minutes seemingly every night-why not take the west coast trip off also just to make sure we're okay? What gets me about this guy is that he's always hurt, yet wants 30 plus million a year, playing well less than 60 games per season on average over the last four seasons. And I don't want to hear about the medical staff needing to clear him-insist on playing Tuesday night-the game is important (Quickley and RJ would play, that's for sure).

Why not try Milton in place of Burks? How much worse could Shake possibly be? Burks is 32 years old, looking like he's going on 42. If he was just simply useless he'd be more helpful than he's been since the trade.

I guess I'm just venting here-tired of losing all these games at home. Split the two game series tomorrow-win at Portland on Thursday, and see what happens.

If OG wasn't coming back, I might be more up for Shake. Alas, my guess is both he and Burks will be riding the pine tonight (if Anunoby plays)

I missed the game last night, and think I will unplug the TV so I won't accidentally see it on League Pass today.

I’m dying to know what other trades were available to use Fournier’s salary slot. I liked the trade at the time but I think if we gave Leon truth serum a month later, he wouldn’t make it again. Burks has sucked, but Bojan really just doesn’t fit with what we try to do as a team. He doesn’t play hard because he can’t. He’s incredibly soft with the ball. I know this isn’t his optimal role, but honestly it’s not that far off from his optimal role! Regardless of who he’s playing with, he’s going to need to guard, get to loose balls, and make a play at the end of the shot clock.

I don't think there was much. My assumption from the reporting is that they were never all that close on the Brogdon front for whatever reason.

I know Leon would’ve been killed for doing nothing…but I think it’s pretty evident (at least right now) that just keeping Fournier and Grimes was the better option not only for using Grimes as an asset, but for productive minutes this season. That all can change if/when we see a healthy version of this team with Bojan, but I’m skeptical. I wonder what effect Grimes’ temporary knee injury played on the Knicks’ willingness to unload him. Recall, they desperately needed bodies on the day of the deadline.

FWIW, I think the Knicks thought the ship had sailed on Grimes as a premium asset. As in, they didn't feel that not having him would hold them back from making a bigger, better trade down the line.

Expand full comment

Yea it definitely seems that way. They’ll really have to sell teams on the fact that Deuce is a “young asset” worth taking back. IMO he’s basically equal to grimes with lower upside because he’s a few inches shorter.

Separate question (since I’m becoming worried about Bojan as a movable asset) - assuming there’s no trade to be made by the start of FA. How much cap space can the Knicks create by losing Burks and renouncing Bojan? They’ll obviously need to pay OG and deal with the Precious/Hartenstein situations. Kinda seems like they wouldn’t be able to create any additional cap space, no?

they're out of the cap space game no matter what they do. That ship has sailed my friend :)

The day to day of this season has just been exhausting. And it’s not even a win-now situation. Maybe a fun topic for a future newsletter or podcast - which fanbase is feeling the most pressure/anxiety. I think the primary factors include how “all-in” the team is, how many more bites at the apple they will get, and how long it’s been since the last title. With a SLIGHT addition for teams who play in large markets and will get more bad press.

I think the clubhouse leader has gotta be the Suns, based solely on the lack of assets and KD’s age. Celtics are up there, but as long as they’re willing to pay a bajillion dollars they can really run it back. Lakers, Warriors, Bucks have all won too recently. Mavs won a title in the past 15 years, but they’re kinda in that zone.

As is more often than not, if a team shoots poorly from the 3-point line, they lose. In spite of knowing that it'll never happen, 3-point shooting has to be reduced--the game is out of balance. I'm saying this because Mike Breen brought up the notion of widening the court, something I've not heard publicly said before but I've been believing in it for 5 years. Breen said he hated the idea, but didn't say why. I say widen, possibly also extend, the court to reduce the over-reliance on the 3-pointer and bring back the midrange and low post game.

Expand full comment

I doubt you'll see it anytime soon, but who knows. I'll say that the recent news about fouls going way down since the ASB means the league clearly thinks there's too much offense.

Expand full comment

Like I said, I don't think the court size will ever be revised, at least not by the likes of Adam Silver. Also, scoring to me is not the upsetting metric. Repeating, it's the balance of the game. So many skills (low-post play, passing, midrange offense) are lost. I don't understand why seemingly so few care about this or even discuss it.

I’m not sure what game you guys are talking about?

LOL

I am not sure that the NY defense was that great so much as Philly missing open shots. I certainly wouldn’t show anyone this game as a NY defensive clinic.

Sure, but they held Philly to 79 points. Even with some open misses, I thought the defensive effort was pretty strong.
